FBI Terms FaceApp a ‘Potential Counterintelligence Threat’

Do you remember FaceApp? An app that went viral a few months ago which applies an aging filter to turn your face old, young and other special effects. FaceApp sparked privacy concerns over its ties to Russia. FBI has responded to Senator Chuk Schumer’s call over FaceApp investigations.

US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called FBI to investigate FaceApp for potential security threats and the FBI has responded. According to Axios, FBI says that anything developed in Russia is a potential counterintelligence threat. The tools available to the government of Russia can access user data.

The FBI considers any mobile application or similar product developed in Russia, such as FaceApp, to be a potential counterintelligence threat, based on the data the product collects, its privacy and terms of use policies, and the legal mechanisms available to the government of Russia that permit access to data within Russia’s borders.

In a new statement, Chuk Schumer has urged all US citizens to delete applications like FaceApp from their phones.

In light of FBI’s warning that FaceApp, and similar applications developed in Russia, poses a potential counterintelligence threat to the United States, I strongly urge all Americans to consider deleting apps like FaceApp immediately and proceed with extreme caution when downloading apps developed in hostile foreign countries.
