YouTube to reduce default video quality to 480p for next month

YouTube previously announced that it is reducing video quality for its users in Europe, this feature will now be implemented for YouTube users around the world. YouTube will reduce the default video quality to 480p for the next month.

Bloomberg reported that YouTube took this step to help lessen the broadband strain as more people are home during the coronavirus lockdown and internet traffic has seen a sudden surge.

We continue to work closely with governments and network operators around the globe to do our part to minimize stress on the system during this unprecedented situation

YouTube said in a statement to Bloomberg

This doesn’t mean that users won’t be allowed to play HD videos. Users can select the HD video option from the video settings. The default quality for video playback will be 480p.

YouTube is not the only company to take steps to lessen the broadband strain. Netflix reduced the bitrate for its users in Europe to ease up the burden by 25%. Most countries are in lockdown, people are spending more and more time online thus impacting broadband quality. Playstation has also said to slow down downloads in Europe.
